This is not a traditional war history, nor is it a formal portrait photography book. Instead it is part biography, part history, part sociology, as I also wanted to capture the individual human stories and record their remarkable endeavours for future generations. These portraits and biographies are indeed individual and can be read as short stories. There are commonalities of course, but they all have their own experiences to tell.

The biographies are based on conversations I had with the veterans, their personal thoughts from those days. I have endeavoured to capture those memories that can often be omitted from military histories.

During this process, the phrase, ‘You’ve heard all this before’ was often said to me, but no, there was always something different and intriguing. The smallest detail can be the most fascinating.

I have included family groups, representing life after the war, as this helped many veterans cope with normal life again in the days before post-conflict counselling was routine.
